Debacle

A 3D Digital Design Exhibition

3d digital design proudly presents:

DE·BA·CLE
A sudden and ignominious failure; a fiasco

–––
Learning to expect the unexpected has become our standard over the past two years, but adaptability is also the foundation of creative endeavours. As artists and designers we know that having a plan is key, but being able to adapt under pressure is what sets apart the great. DEBACLE calls us to learn from unforeseen obstacles, and reminds us that the unexpected can also wield positive results.

THE WORK:

SCRAP YARD ROBOT GRARRL
Wren Swim, ASP Student (@usbfig)
Blender, Substance Painter, Resin 3D Print, Acrylic
2022
This model was a debacle from start to finish. It was buggy during the modeling process, and when 3D printed, the printer merged sections together. I ended up buying a dremel to sand and chisel things into shape. In the end, you can still see print lines, and it’s not perfect - but it tells a story. And without a debacle, the creative process wouldn’t be as rewarding.Back to Artists

OVERLOAD
Tyler Cochrane (@l._tyler_4)
Corel Painter 2021
2022
As artists, we sometimes go overboard with the projects we take on. I wanted to visualize that feeling of having all these ideas and concepts we want to create, but not quite having the energy to do so.Back to Artists

WHAT LIVES IN THE DEEP
Travas Soucy (@maker_works_inc)
Digital 3D
2022
What lives in the deep depicts a traveler with a torch looking on at the epic scale of the monster before them. I chose to to make the piece was take an already unusual animal and push that idea further by enlarging it and changing it's environment.Back to Artists

DEEP SPACE PICKERS
Todd Delong (@syntheticmonkey), artstation.com/synthmonkey
Blender, Zbrush, Substance Painter
2022
This piece is the box art for a game I’m kind of developing at an incredibly slow pace. Like most of my work if you’re looking for deeper meaning... Good luck with that :D.Back to Artists

WHAT A GREAT DAY
Seán Larsson (@ThatElfNerd)
Blender, Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer
2022
This piece is one that hits hard for some. I’m sure many have felt like poor little Pouchie here more than once. You wake up feeling great, everything’s on the up and up, and nothing seems amiss. Unfortunately, there’s something looming over you that you’re not ready for, which can mess up your whole day. It can feel sometimes like your life is a cartoon, and you’re the punchline; however, if you dwell only on the negatives, you’ll be stuck in place, and life will constantly smack you in the face. Remember that it’s okay to have bad days, and give yourself time to recover. And hopefully, once you’re better, there will be some days where you can just smile, and keep moving forward.Back to Artists

SALVAGE
Rianna Howard
Corrupted NEF photo files from a damaged SD Card, Photoshop
2022
This piece simply consists of corrupted/destroyed image files stitched together to create something new. I took something that is otherwise deemed “unusable,” “ruined," into something of value (to me). Failure and challenge is my go-to creative process.Back to Artists

ARE YOU DONE YET?
Reid Mallett (@Demonspirit1)
Blender, Photoshop
2022
Kids can be impatient sometimes. For my piece I wanted to model a small snippet of a world I’ve been working on for a few months now. The two characters are brothers who live in this large medieval castle like home. The small character in front (Wander) is waiting for his brother (Vesper) to finish up some work so they can go out and play.Back to Artists

NEW LOOK
Michael Pohl (@michael.p.what.i.do.see)
Zbrush, Blender, Substance Painter, Photoshop
2022
Take a step back and think about just how silly our species is. Pursuing the superficial with boundless energy. Saying how tired we are when important tasks need to be accomplished. Stressing over things that cannot change. Agonizing over things that are not important. Dismissing the important things. Reveling in the Anthropocene with a credit card at the ready.
I work from the perspective that it is better to laugh than to cry. So, if I am not making something of use in the woodshop, if I am experiencing the unlimited creative freedom of the digital realm, then I like to have a bit of fun. I hope you do too.
